I love jigsaw puzzles—dumping the colorful pieces onto the table in a chaotic mess and imagining the picture that will emerge. What begins with excitement can quickly become challenging as the pieces refuse to fall into place.
Some days, I feel that my life is like a puzzle—hundreds of random pieces, all colorful and full of possibility, yet overwhelming at times. The mundane tasks, responsibilities, and relationships that require intentional work can feel like that scattered puzzle spread across the table.
To bring order to the chaos, I’ve learned to begin with a simple but essential step.
Start with defined borders…
I’ve discovered that my day needs a border before anything else demands my attention. For me, that border looks like prayer, scripture, and quiet moments with my Heavenly Father.
It takes intention and careful persistence to form the frame that will hold all of the other random pieces together and ultimately reveal a beautiful picture. When I don’t begin my day with a defined border and intentional order, the pieces can quickly become overwhelming, like a chaotic pile of colorful puzzle pieces.
”The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” — Psalm 16:6 ESV
Boundaries remind us that God lovingly determines our borders—not as limitations, but as places of protection, purpose, and blessing. This verse reflects the confidence that where God has placed us and what He has entrusted to us is ultimately good and part of our inheritance in Him.
Once the frame is in place, the next step is to understand what the finished picture should look like.
Look at the picture…
Just as the picture on the puzzle box keeps me from guessing where each piece belongs, God’s Word keeps me focused on His purposes instead of my own understanding. The more I look to Him, the less likely I am to force pieces into places that were never meant to fit.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV
God’s Word provides a picture of His plans and purposes for my life. As I read Scripture and trust in His plans, I gain a glimpse of the bigger picture rather than relying only on my own understanding.
With a clearer vision in mind, it becomes easier to organize the pieces in front of me.
Sort the pieces with purpose…
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given (to) him.” — James 1:5 ESV
God has given me wisdom through experience, but when the pieces don’t seem to make sense and I am feeling frustrated, He generously extends the invitation to come to Him for wisdom. God speaks words of love and comfort that He is working in me and will provide wisdom for me. His gentle voice reminds me that He is at work, even when I cannot clearly see the whole picture, and that He will faithfully provide all that I need.
As the pieces begin to come together, something beautiful starts to happen within the process itself.
Delight in the process…
I’ve learned that not every piece fits in the same place. Some pieces connect quickly; others sit untouched until the right moment. In the same way, God gives wisdom to know what deserves my attention today and what can wait for tomorrow.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.” Psalm 37:4-5 ESV
Delighting in the Lord allows me to trust Him with the unfinished places in my life, knowing that He is still at work.
Even with progress and joy, there are moments when perseverance becomes the most important step.
Don’t give up, finish strong…
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 ESV
Keep placing the pieces of your life into God’s hands and follow Him as He leads. He gives us strength to persevere, patience to wait, and endurance to keep placing one more piece where God directs.
Even when the picture feels incomplete or confusing, remember that every piece has purpose and every moment is part of His greater design.
As you trust Him to guide your steps, set healthy boundaries, seek His wisdom, and delight in His presence, you will begin to see how He is faithfully bringing everything together.
”Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own, But one thing I do; forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14.
Life rarely comes together all at once. More often, it is built one faithful choice, one surrendered prayer, one act of obedience at a time. What once looked like scattered pieces slowly becomes a testimony of God’s faithfulness. Every piece matters because every piece is held in the hands of the Master Designer. His grace is creating something more beautiful than we could ever imagine.
Lord, I trust that You know the plans You have for me. Help me to seek You first, trust You with all my heart, and not rely on my own understanding. Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction, patience to wait for Your timing, faith to follow wherever You lead, and persistence to stay strong in Your plan. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
